The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre’s City-Wide Food Drive is back with a twist!
In 2019, 13.5% of Saskatchewan households were food insecure. When surveyed again in September-December of 2020, when Canadians were able to access financial supports like CERB, the percentage of food insecure households dropped by almost half to 7.5%. With these financial supports largely ended or changed, many more Saskatchewanians are struggling again to make ends meet and keep their plates full.
For example, we know that compared to last March, both individual and household usage of our Emergency Nutrition program has increased by a third this year. That means we’re seeing more members of the community accessing Emergency Food Hampers each month, and almost half of those are children.
Imagine having to decide between calling in sick from work or being able to afford groceries for the next week. Our Emergency Food Hampers provide 2-3 days worth of food, which mean you won’t have to make that choice.
Throughout the month of May, we’re raising food and funds through the City-Wide Food Drive to support the community. Join us this month in our call, “Don’t Let Your Neighbour Fall Through The Cracks” and get involved by donating today.
You can donate two ways: Purchase a few extra items or pre-made food donation bag to place in collection bins in grocery stores across the city. Or donate funds online at our website.
