Our Nutrition Program aims to promote food literacy, food skills, and food safety concepts while bolstering food security and access to nutritious food. The Nutrition Program utilizes food as a facilitator of social connection and community development. We also work to promote equity and social justice and aim to honour traditional diets and knowledge surrounding food.

Food, nutrition, and health are closely linked, but food also connects us with culture, pleasure, tradition, and represents an important part of our connection to the natural world. We aim to uphold and promote all of these principles in the work that we do.

DiD you know that last fiscal year…

COOKING CLASSES

This program provides live, in-person and virtual cooking classes with a trained facilitator that allows participants to acquire additional food skills, often from the comfort of their own kitchens. The program aims to provide healthy food and learning opportunities to families, children and youth, Indigenous groups, newcomers to Canada, and others. While enrolled in the program, participants receive a cooking kit with the ingredients required to make a nutritious recipe twice. The virtual lessons are provided live online with step-by-step instruction allowing the participants and the facilitator to cook together.

The lessons are often paired with a knowledge component where participants gain additional food and nutrition literacy skills, and are welcome to share their own tips and knowledge with the group. In addition, the cooking class program provides an opportunity for participants to connect with each other and with the facilitator, adding an element of social connection and mental health promotion to the program.
